If you’re a freelancer, having a home office is crucial.
For so long I went the coffee shop route, but one day I just couldn’t do it anymore. I needed my own space.
The excitement stayed with me throughout the planning process. And once I started getting my space the way I wanted it, I began to add small touches here and there to reflect my personality. As a result, my productivity increased.
I never realized how fun it would be to set up my own office.
I started with the most crucial parts: a desk, chair, and desk accessories.
My friends encouraged me to get a standing desk, but that wasn’t comfortable for me. I chose a simple one with enough space for my laptop, lamp, and desk organizer that contained my pens and writing supplies.
As for the chair, I wanted one that was as comfortable as possible.
It definitely had to have lumbar support and glide easily across the carpet.
Once all that was situated, I added the personal touches, such as a wall mirror to make my office feel bigger and some paintings that soothed me. Last but not least, I hung up a bulletin board for notices and special notes from my family.
Everything in the office looked great, but I was missing one thing.
It’s funny, but I completely forgot about the trash can. This is a necessary piece of equipment for me because I’m constantly throwing papers away.
Surprisingly, I had a difficult time picking out the one I wanted. The site I found was incredible; it’s unbelievable how many choices there are. In the end, I went with a stylish, chrome trashcan to go with the rest of my modern looking office.
Once my office was set up, I worked on setting a schedule that worked well with my style of working. I had to train myself to take my business eve more seriously if I wanted to meet my goals for the year.
Music helped me focus on the task at hand. I also shut down access to websites and applications on my computer that didn’t contribute to my work.
Setting up my office was probably the best decision I made all year. I’m hoping my bottom line reflects that.
